Can I use vinegar on my sofa? What to check first

Before trying vinegar on a sofa, check care guidance, construction and previous treatments—and understand the limits of cleaning.

Vinegar is not a universal sofa-cleaning answer

Vinegar appears in some manufacturer guidance, but that does not establish that it is suitable for your sofa. Sunbrella, for example, includes diluted white vinegar with dishwashing liquid and water for bird droppings, urine and vomit on Sunbrella fabric. That is a fabric- and stain-specific recommendation, not a general sofa-cleaning recipe.

Not every sofa should be cleaned the same way. Assessment determines the scope of cleaning and what can reasonably be expected from the result.

Check the material, care guidance and furniture construction

The visible fabric is only part of the decision. Fibre composition, finish, furniture construction and current condition can all affect the method. If you have a manufacturer label, keep it available: it is useful when starting an enquiry with Prestige Care, although it is not required.

Sunbrella's upholstery guidance says cleaning methods should reflect how the furniture was made. It also advises consulting the furniture manufacturer before removing casings for machine washing, because cushion construction varies. A removable cover is not, by itself, confirmation that it can be machine washed.

Understand the limits of an inconspicuous test

For its upholstery textiles, Kvadrat advises checking fabric-specific care and maintenance guidance before cleaning and testing a cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area for adverse reactions. This is not a general endorsement of vinegar. Nor does a successful test establish compatibility with every component of a sofa.

Account for previous treatments and realistic cleaning limits

Mention any products already applied, including vinegar, and any earlier professional cleaning. Previous treatments may affect what can safely be done next. Describe the soiling and the improvement you hope to achieve: Prestige Care's assessment considers previous treatment alongside material, construction, condition, soiling and what can realistically be improved.

Cleaning can remove soiling, but it cannot reverse fading, abrasion, colour loss, fibre damage or other changes that have become part of the material. Removing dirt and restoring damaged material are different expectations.

Prepare a description, photos and any available label

A short description and a few photos can help Prestige Care understand the job before a visit. Share any available manufacturer label, too. If the material or condition cannot be assessed confidently from photos alone, Prestige Care explains what else needs to be checked.

Let assessment determine the recommended scope

Prestige Care cleans sofas, armchairs, chairs and other upholstered furniture across the Costa del Sol. Before work begins, it assesses material, construction, condition and the type of soiling. The method follows the material and condition rather than simply the service name, and the recommended scope and price are explained beforehand.
