Yellow stains on your mattress: possible causes and what to do next

Check your mattress’s care instructions before treating a yellow mark. Sweat and prolonged moisture are possible causes; yellowing within foam can also result from oxidation.

Sweat and prolonged moisture are possible causes

IKEA identifies sweat and prolonged moisture as possible causes of yellowish mattress discolouration. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular mark. Before treating the stain, check your mattress’s care instructions.

Yellow foam is different from a yellow fabric stain

Foam mattress cores, including memory foam, can naturally yellow through oxidation when exposed to oxygen. Yellowing within foam is not proof that a yellow stain on the outer fabric has the same cause.

Check the instructions before unzipping the cover

Follow your mattress manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model. A zip does not automatically mean the cover is removable and washable. Before unzipping, check that the instructions explicitly allow removal and washing. Permission to wash a cover is not permission to wash the mattress core.

Foam and springs have different moisture risks

IKEA advises against soaking the whole mattress during stain treatment. Excess water can damage foam structure or remain trapped in the core. In a spring mattress, moisture can cause rust in the core, so IKEA recommends cleaning the surface with minimal liquid. That does not mean a visible yellow mark is rust.

For a fresh spill, absorb the surplus liquid

For a fresh liquid spill, NCCA’s general textile guidance recommends absorbing the surplus with an absorbent cloth or white kitchen towel. This is an immediate response to spilled liquid, not a treatment for an older, dry yellow mark.

If liquid treatment is permitted, use small amounts

Only consider liquid stain treatment if your mattress’s instructions allow it. NCCA’s general textile guidance recommends working from the stain’s outside edge inwards, applying treatment a little at a time. Any products used must be permitted by the mattress manufacturer.

Let a cleaned foam mattress dry completely

For foam mattresses, IKEA advises complete drying after cleaning, with good air circulation and no direct sunlight. Do not assume it will dry within a set number of hours or be ready to use the same day.

Add a protector to help prevent future staining

IKEA recommends placing a mattress protector between the mattress and fitted sheet to help prevent staining. It is not a treatment for existing yellowing and does not guarantee protection against every spill.
